How have Year 3 been impressing their teachers this week?…
3HF – Haider for trying really hard with his maths work and Harry for improving his handwriting and general class work. Well done to both!
3PG – Mrs Maddison would like to thank 3PG for being such a kind and hard working class, as she has come back from maternity and is enjoying teaching them on Thursdays and Fridays.
How have Year 3 been impressing in the past weeks?

Spring
Maths
Along with the rest of the academy, Year 3 will be following the Collin’s Mathematics Scheme, coupled with focuses on problem solving, fluency and mastery, some of which can be found on the engaging and well-crafted White Rose Maths website.
During Spring term, Year 3 are going to be having a strong focus on addition and subtraction; utilising a range of formal and informal methods to solve arithmetic and written problems. They will also be using formal and informal methods to explore multiplication and division. Year 3 will also have the opportunity to engage with the properties of shape, enhance their understanding of fractions and exploring measurement with a particular focus on length.
Literacy
Year 3 will be following the Literacy and Language scheme, which offers the children vast opportunities to write at length, whilst exploring quality texts. Children will also be undertaking writing opportunities focused on their Class Readers, information of which can be found below.
In Spring term, Year 3 will begin by writing a narrative in their fictional focus before moving on to their non-fiction topic of engaging in a balanced discussion. They will then progress on to another fictional writing focus, this time on poetry before finishing the term with their non-fiction topic of writing an explanations text.
Coupled with these exciting writing opportunities, the children will also get the chance to write a variety of pieces based around their class reader, which this term is ‘Matilda’.

Throughout the Spring term, Year 3 will be reading the popular and engaging story Matilda written by Roald Dahl. The children will also be undertaking a range of comprehension activities aimed at enhancing their ability to find and understand key vocabulary, inferring meaning from what they have read, predicting character’s actions or what may happen next, explaining their understanding of what they have read, retrieving key information from the story and being able to summarise their reading.
Humanities
In Spring term, Year 3 will be learning about Ancient Civilisations. They will begin this exciting exploration by focusing on the Egyptians. Throughout this focus the children will create chronological timelines, discover lots of information about the pharaohs, pyramids, mummification process and more. They will also learn about how the Egyptians communicated through hieroglyphics and make comparisons between then and now.
Following this, the children will then progress on to another Ancient Civilisation; the Aztecs. The children will discover where the Aztecs were located geographically, explore their art and various other artefacts, learn about the Gods that they worshipped and draw comparisons between the Aztecs and the Egyptians.

science
In Science, Year 3 will begin the term by exploring ‘Can you see me?’. Through this topic the children will be learning about mirrors, shadows, glasses, sunglasses, seeing in the dark and more! The children will then move on to ‘Amazing bodies’ where they will discover what humans need to survive including an exploration of how the skeleton and muscles work.
PHSE
Children in Year 3 will be following the expertly scripted and age appropriate Jigsaw PHSE Curriculum Scheme. In Spring term Year 3’s focus for PHSE will be ‘Dreams and Goals’ and ‘Healthy Me’.
RE
In RE this year, Year 3 will be enjoying the opportunity to look at a range of religions. During Spring term, Year 3 will begin by learning about ‘Signs and Symbols’ before moving on to learning about the ‘Chinese New Year’. In the second half of the term, Year 3 will have a focus on ‘Sikhism’, exploring the ‘Sikh rites of passage’.
Art/DT
This term Year 3 will be exploring two exciting Art topics which are ‘A Cheerful Orchestra’ and ‘Typography for Children’. They will then progress to their DT focus which is ‘Story Books’.
