How have Year 3 been impressing their teachers this week?…

Miss Purohit is very proud of Emilie. She is a super role model for the other children, always showing how polite and friendly she is!


Our  school year 2020-21




Along with the rest of the academy, Year 3 will be following the Collin’s Mathematics Scheme, coupled with focuses on problem solving, fluency and mastery, some of which can be found on the engaging and well-crafted White Rose Maths website.

During Autumn term, Year 3 are going to be having a strong focus on addition and subtraction; utilising a range of formal and informal methods to solve arithmetic and written problems. They will also be using formal and informal methods to explore multiplication and division. Year 3 will also have the opportunity to engage with the properties of shape, enhance their understanding of fractions and explore various units of measurement.



Year 3 will be following the Literacy and Language scheme, which offers the children vast opportunities to write at length, whilst exploring quality texts. Children will also be undertaking writing opportunities focused on their Class Readers, information of which can be found below.

In Autumn term, Year 3 will be first engaging in Descriptive Writing with a link to fiction, followed by a non-fiction focus on writing a Travel Guide. The children will then progress onto the fictional focused Playscript topic before Instructional Writing in their final non-fiction topic. As previously stated, the children will also be undertaking a plethora of writing opportunities focused on their class reader which this term is ‘The Iron Man’.

Throughout the Autumn term, Year 3 will be reading the engaging and beautifully crafted ‘The Iron Man’ story written by Ted Hughes. The children will also be undertaking a range of comprehension activities aimed at enhancing their ability to find and understand key vocabulary, inferring meaning from what they have read, predicting character’s actions or what may happen next, explaining their understanding of what they have read, retrieving key information from the story and being able to summarise their reading.


In Autumn term, Year 3 will be given the opportunity to explore two engaging areas of focus. They will first be learning about the History focused topic of ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’. Here the children will creating timelines, exploring primary and secondary historical evidence of the time and much more.

Following this, Year 3 will enjoying the more geographical focus of ‘Rainforests’. During this fascinating topic, children will be exploring what the Rainforest is, it’s climate, the potential inhabitants that may live there and more!

Some key vocabulary for these areas of Humanities are:

Stone Age to Iron Age: Ancient, artefact, century, circa, climate, discovery, era, extinct, farming, flint, gather, hearths, island, Mesolithic, ligration, meolithic, paleolithic, remains, settlement.

Rainforests: Longitude, latitude, vegetation belt, rainforest, producer, eco system, water cycle, evaporation, condensation, temperature, line chart, bar graph, woodland, understory, Capricorn, cancer, equator, region, amazon, altitude, consumer, emergent, forest floor.



In Science, Year 3 will be looking at rocks. They will have the opportunity to handle the rocks, explore different soil samples and undertake investigations such as finding out which soil holds the most water and which one does not allow the water to seep in. Following this, the children will explore a focus on ‘The Power Forces’. During this children will learn how things move, which objects are magnetic and get the opportunity to use magnets and see firs hand how they work.



Children in Year 3 will be following the expertly scripted and age appropriate Jigsaw PHSE Curriculum Scheme. In Autumn term Year 3’s focus for PHSE will be ‘Being me into the World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.



In RE this year, Year 3 will be enjoying the opportunity to look at a range of religions. During Autumn term, Year 3 will begin by learning about the Christian faith, exploring questions such as ‘What do we know about Jesus?’ and ‘What is the bible and why is it important to Christians?’. Following this the children will move on to learning about the Jewish faith, discovering the meaning behind the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah and understanding ‘Why is the Torah special?’.



This term Year 3 will be exploring a range or Art topics such as Quentin Blake’s drawing as inspiration, Sculptural characters inspired by Dahl and Blake, Making drawings move and Making articulated beasts. They will then be progressing onto the Design and technology focus of Packaging.
