How have Year 6 been impressing their teachers this week?…

6HL – Miss Lowbridge is very impressed with Nimrah and Diana, who have made super progress with their reading understanding.

 

Our  school year 2020-21

Autumn

Maths

Along with the rest of the academy, Year 6 will be following the Collin’s Mathematics Scheme, coupled with focuses on problem solving, fluency and mastery, some of which can be found on the engaging and well-crafted White Rose Maths website.

In Autumn term, Year 6 will begin with a strong exploration of Place Value which then leads the children into Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Through these key areas of Mathematics, our children will utilise a range of formal and informal methods across a variety of arithmetic and written word problems. Year 6 will then progress onto consolidating their knowledge of Fractions, Decimals and Percentagesa further exploration of Position and Direction, engaging with the Properties of Shape before finishing the term looking at the Measurement of Length. 

Coupled with this extensive array of learning, the children have ample opportunity to apply their knowledge to SAT style questions in preparation for their end of year examinations.

 

Literacy

Year 6 will begin the academic following the Literacy and Language scheme, which offers the children vast opportunities to write at length, whilst exploring quality texts. Children will then progress onto a plethora of writing opportunities focused on their Class Readers, information of which can be found below.

In the first half of the Autumn term, the children will be exploring the fictional topic of Authors and Texts, which is coupled with ‘I Believe in Unicorns’ by Michael Morpurgo. Year 6 will then progress onto the fascinating and incredibly engaging ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll.

 

Class Reader

In Class Reader this term, Year 6 have the pleasure of reading, exploring and engaging with Emma Carroll’s ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’. Throughout this story the children will have a wide range of opportunities to write at length and develop their comprehension skills. These skills will be enhanced by undertaking a range of comprehension activities aimed at developing their ability to find and understand key vocabulary including synonyms and antonyms, inferring meaning from what they have read, predicting character’s actions or what may happen next, explaining their understanding of what they have read, retrieving key information from the story and being able to summarise their reading.

 

Humanities

During Autumn term, Year 6 are exploring an ‘Around the World’ topic. Here the children will have the opportunity to learn at length about the Mayan Civilisation. This will include learning about where and when the Civilisation existed, why it was so significant in History, looking at what life was like for people during this era and much more. The children will explore this topic whilst looking at a range of primary and secondary evidence and being provided with opportunities to inquire and debate at length.

 

Science

Science in Autumn term for Year 6 begins with Body Pump. Here the children will explore the circulatory system, learn about the heart and how it works, develop their understanding of blood, what’s in it and how it travels around the body. Year 6 will then progress onto Body Health. This area of science will allow the children to learn about the importance of being healthy, food groups, diet and the factors that can affect our health.

 

PHSE

Children in Year 6 will be following the expertly scripted and age appropriate Jigsaw PHSE Curriculum Scheme. In Autumn term Year 6’s focus for PHSE will be ‘Being me into the World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’.

 

RE

In RE this year, Year 6 will be enjoying the opportunity to look at a range of religions. They will begin with Christianity, exploring the question ‘What is a Church?’. The children will then progress onto Islam, being faced with the question ‘What is the Qur’an and why is it important to Muslims?’.

 

Art/DT

During Art this term, Year 6 will have the opportunity to undertake Exploring Set Design before moving onto Shadow Puppets. The children will then be presented with the chance to create Chinese Inventions in their DT lessons.
